Who You Are

A core member of the CaroNova leadership team, the Director of Strategic Communications  is responsible for the development, implementation and success monitoring of CaroNova’s annual and long-term communication strategy. The Director works with CaroNova leadership, board, and partners to ensure that all marketing and communications initiatives clearly and consistently advance CaroNova’s direction, mission, and programmatic aims.

What You'll Do

The Director of Strategic Communications will hold experience and expertise in building and implementing integrated plans and campaigns to increase awareness and engagement in the non-profit sector. The Director will hold translatable skills in creating content for boards, funders, policymakers, and other key stakeholders that effectively conveys CaroNova’s purpose, progress, and long-term directional aims.

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance CaroNova and broaden awareness of its programs and priorities to increase the visibility of its work across key stakeholder audiences
  • Proactively identify challenges, opportunities, and emerging issues for CaroNova and active leadership team and staff to execute internal and external communications opportunities and solutions
  • Create marketing/public relations and thought leadership strategies that will allow CaroNova leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including community partners and funders, and other key influencers
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with media contacts to ensure a proactive earned media strategy
  • Lead the development of all content, including content for the CaroNova Advisory Board, website and social media channels, email marketing, print and digital publications, that engages key audience segments and leads to measurable action
  • Oversee website maintenance—ensuring that all information (i.e., programmatic updates, news, stories, and events) is relevant and up-to-date
  • Develop and implement an earned media strategy to engage, cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure exposure and awareness of CaroNova efforts across the region with core constituencies
  •  Represent CaroNova publicly across the Carolinas and nationally serving as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions to advance organizational position and reputation
  • Develop and maintain a network of key contacts among various stakeholders to encourage engagement in and promotion of CaroNova activities. Foster regular exchange of information and ongoing collaboration among core constituencies
  • Manage and lead all external agency partners in support of CaroNova work
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, and professional development of assigned staff
  • Maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders across the Carolinas and source new opportunities for study
  • Clearly and effectively present information to the CaroNova Advisory Board, state agency leaders, and other relevant boards and committees

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training in marketing, communications or related field
  • 10+ years of communications experience in non-profit health, social, or educational organization
  • Exceptional writing, project management, communication, design and relationship-building skills
